Educational Advisory Board

The Raleigh International/Birkbeck Educational Advisory Board (EAB) has been set-up to provide expert strategic and practical guidance in the development of an accredited experiential learning programmes relating to Raleigh overseas expeditions. The programme includes learning themes such as leadership, cultural awareness, global citizenship and sustainable development within an informal/experiential learning framework.

Role of Advisory Board

  • Oversee and provide strategic and practical advice
  • Advise and provide expert guidance on policy, practice and academic research
  • Act as advisers on the high level educational vision and objectives, ensuring quality and guidance on direction
  • Serve as a critical sounding board in the development of further ideas and initiatives

Membership

A team of international experts in the fields of leadership, cultural awareness, lifelong learning, experiential education, global citizenship, accreditation and youth education; and representatives from employers and policy makers. The Advisory Board members are:

Educational Advisory Board Biographies

Professor John Annette

John Annette is Professor of Citizenship and Lifelong Learning, Pro Vice Master for Lifelong Learning and Engagement at Birkbeck, University of London and Chair of the International Centre for Education for Democratic Citizenship, which is a joint research centre with the Institute of Education. He recently with Dr. Dina Kiwan secured an ESRC Research Seminar on diversity, nationality and citizenship education.

He is on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Educational Studies, the International Journal of Citizenship Education and the London Review of Education.

He has been active in working in partnership with local communities in London and facilitating capacity building for community involvement for many years. He is an advisor to the Department for Children, Families and Schools on youth volunteering and citizenship education, also the Department for Communities and Local Government on capacity building for citizenship and community development. He is on the Executive of the Universities Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL) and is the Chair of the Higher Education Panel of the Lifelong Learning Sector Skills Council as well as an advisor to the HEFCE Beacons for Public Engagement and a member of the East London Business Alliance.

He was recently a Commissioner on the Commission on the Future of Volunteering chaired by Baroness Julia Neuberger, is on the executive of the London Empowerment Network organized by the London Civic Forum, which supports the Greater London Authority and the Mayor, and he is currently the Chair of the Linking London Lifelong Learning Network and the Higher Education Academy's PVC Employer Engagement Group.

Dr. Simon Beames

Lecturer in Outdoor Education, Edinburgh University
Simon Beames is a lecturer and researcher in the Moray House School of Education at the University of Edinburgh. He is particularly interested in learning through journeys outside the classroom and in using social theory to examine outdoor education practice.

Dr. Douglas Bourn

Director of Development Education Research Centre, Institute of Education, University of London. The Centre, formed in 2006, acts as the knowledge hub for research and learning about development education. It runs a masters course on development and currently has a partnership funding agreement with DFID as well as income from consultancy and research from a range of NGOs including CAFOD, Plan-UK, People and Planet and Engineers Without Poverty. Editor of International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning. Most recent publications: Development Education: Debates and Dialogues published by Bedford Way Press 2008, Global Skills for LSIS, 2008. Author of numerous articles on young people and students as global citizens, global dimension in formal education, education for sustainable development and global perspectives in higher education. Chair of Earth Charter UK and Humanities Education Centre, Tower Hamlets. Member and past chair of UK Committee on Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Also member of Co-operative College Board of Governors.

From 1993 to 2006, Dr. Bourn was Director of the Development Education Association (DEA) and in that capacity was a member of a range of government advisory groups on development awareness, global citizenship and sustainable development education. From 1990 to 1993 he was Head of Local Groups Department at Friends of the Earth. From 1983 to 1990 he was National Secretary of the Woodcraft Folk.

His current research projects are Returned Volunteers and Development Awareness for VSO, Moving from Evaluation to Research in Development Education, Understanding the Global Dimension within Further Education for LSIS and DFID and Young People and Students as Global Citizens for DFID.

John Gillard

John Gillard is currently has the Programme Manager for Business Technology Consultant graduate programme within Capgemini. He leads a team of 70 graduates focusing on profitability as his primary goal. Through delivering a profitable programme he is able to ensure that the graduate's personal development is sustained. John's passion for innovation means that he regularly offers new initiatives to the programme.

John went on expedition to Chile in 1992 with Raleigh. Upon his return he was an active member of the Surrey Support Group taking part in many local and national events. His passion for Raleigh has been rekindled through his Graduate Programme Manager role. Every six months, Raleigh delivers a leadership and teamworking community project for his graduates. The format of the weekend has gradually evolved to include many more challenges than was originally envisaged and is now a core part of his development programme.

More recently John has just secured funding for one of his graduates to go on sabbatical with Raleigh to the Borneo.

Carlos A. Gonzalez-Carrasco

Carlos A. González-Carrasco is the Founder and Director of the Intercultural Business Group (IBG) an international business development, leadership, management and intercultural training consultancy practice, Carlos is a Senior International Business Development Consultant.

Mr. González-Carrasco is a leading international expert consultant on; Glocal Leadership, Management and Intercultural Training practices working for leading global providers. He has extensive working and living experience in key countries of Arabia, Eastern, Central and Western Europe, USA, Asia, Central Asia and Latin America.

Carlos is the Director of P&L Communication Group (UK Office), P&L is an expert consultancy providing specialist public relations, marketing, brand building, management, communications, support and help companies growing their businesses in China and the Asia region.

In the past Mr. González-Carrasco worked as the Global Business Development Manager for The Body Shop International Plc, responsible for company business expansion into Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Central Europe.

He had a successful and longstanding career in media and TV. Carlos worked as an independent filmmaker and TV producer/consultant for BCC TV, CNN, ABC and TV Asahi (Japan) on current affairs issues. In 1992, won an Emmy Award in USA for the best historical documentary "The Cuban Missile Crisis" produced for BBC TV.

Robert Johnson

Robert P.K. Johnson is a freelance lecturer and consultant specialising in intercultural communication and cross-cultural business relations. He has designed and delivered a range of lecture courses and training programmes for increasing awareness of cultural differences and improving interpersonal relations in multicultural contexts.

In the academic field, he is Lecturer in Cross-cultural Management at the European Business School, Regent's College, London, and Visiting Lecturer in Professional and Business Communication at Birkbeck College, University of London. His research interests include business relations between East Asia and Europe, Japanese language and culture and politeness across cultures.

Robert has undertaken consultancy and training work for a wide variety of organisations in the UK, including Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Hitachi, KPMG, Sony and Unilever. Clients in the public sector have included ACAS, the National School of Government and UKTI. He recently completed a major project for CILT, the National Centre for Languages, to develop a comprehensive programme of cultural diversity training for managers across London, sponsored by the Learning and Skills Council.

He has extensive experience of living and working as a business communications trainer and consultant in France, Germany, Japan and China, and speaks French, German and Japanese. He is a Board Member of SIETAR Europa (the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research) and served on the organising committee for a major global congress on intercultural relations in Granada, Spain in October 2008.

Dr. Andrew Jones

Andrew is Reader in Human Geography and Head of the Geography, Environment & Development Studies Department at Birkbeck College, University of London. His research interests span a range of economic, urban and sociological issues but have long focused on globalization. A major element of this has been concerned with international voluntary work, NGOS and development. He was previously commission by the UK Department for Education to conduct a policy review gap years and has subsequently undertaken research on the impacts of international volunteering in Latin America, Africa and Asia. He has acted as an advisor to government and a range of third sector organizations on youth volunteering. More widely, he is author of thirty journal articles and book chapters, as well as three books including his most recent, Globalization: Key Thinkers.

John Kerr

John Kerr is Deloitte's leader of Consulting in EMEA, is Managing Partner of Talent in the UK firm and leads the UK Aerospace and Defence practice.

John's consulting experience has been in strategy and change management in a number of industries. He has extensive experience in creating focus around business strategies and in integrating management teams to implement those strategies. He has led a number of major business transformation projects.

He has served clients in many industries in the course of his career, including utilities, manufacturing, media and financial services.

He lives in London and is married with five children.

Dr. Dina Kiwan

Dina Kiwan has over 10 years' experience in the fields of education, citizenship, human rights and psychology in the UK and the USA in the domains of research, teaching, policy and practice, having previously worked at Harvard University, Columbia University, Amnesty International at the United Nations, the National Council for Vocational Qualifications, and the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. Most recently, she was on a two-year secondment to the Home Office as the Head of Secretariat to an Advisory Board on Naturalisation and Integration (ABNI), set up by Professor Sir Bernard Crick (highly acclaimed political theorist and campaigner for political literacy in schools since the 1960s).

She has been responsible for advising the government on policy development with regard to immigrant education in English language and political literacy/citizenship, and the development of the new British citizenship test, which was introduced as a new requirement in November 2005. Previously, she was a researcher at the EPPI-Centre (Evidence for Policy and Practice Coordinating Centre), a DfES-funded initiative at the Social Science Research Unit (SSRU), Institute of Education, University of London, where she was responsible for supporting the work of external groups conducting systematic reviews in a range of topics in education, including citizenship education, diversity, and post-compulsory education.

Dr. Linda Milbourne

Dr Linda Milbourne is a Lecturer at Birkbeck College in Youth, Voluntary and Community Studies and has undertaken research and teaching in higher education since 1998. Previously, at King's College, London, her research focused on social exclusion and social policy initiatives related to alternative education approaches for young people. Currently she is studying community-based services, comparing the experiences of smaller and larger organisations and also youth participation initiatives. Linda has some 20 years experience of public and non-profit organisations, as a practitioner, manager and researcher. Her research interests include organisational and professional changes in third sector services, inter-agency and partnership working, youth and educational initiatives initiatives, and the effects of recent procurement arrangements.

Dr. Anita Walsh

Anita Walsh joined the Faculty of Lifelong Learning in September 2005. She is a Lecturer in Work-Based Learning, and also the Director of the College's Centre for Learning and Professional Development.

Previously Anita was a Senior Lecturer at Kingston University, where she was a member of the University's Academic Development Centre with responsibility for the areas of work-based learning and experiential learning.

Anita has lectured in Politics, Public Policy and Women's Studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Anita's research focuses on the academic recognition of high level learning which takes place outside the institution. She is exploring the epistemology of work-based learning, and the interface between work-based learning and academic disciplines.
