Although Raleigh International has its origins in expeditions for young people, we offer opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities, whether they join our expeditions directly, whether they are referred to us or whether they join a tailor-made expedition organised by their employer, school or membership organisation.
Young people, whom we call venturers, come to us directly, either fundraising or working to raise the money to take part in an expedition.
Young people on a Year in Industry combo-placement have the choice of joining a Raleigh expedition as part of a structured year out. International agencies such as Weg Wijs in Holland recommend participants to Raleigh.
Young people from all backgrounds from the countries where we work also come on expedition through host country participant programmes. We currently offer programmes in Costa Rica and Malaysia.
Youth Agency partnership organisations in the UK such as Fairbridge, Weston Spirit, Foyer Federation, Princes Trust, Groundwork, Tullochan Trust, Venture Scotland and others refer their young people who can benefit from the impact of our programme.
We also work in partnership with organisations such as Raleigh Bermuda and Bridging the Gap in Australia.
Annually we recruit up to 300 volunteer managers who help run the expeditions either by working directly with the young people on the project site or at field base in a variety of roles.
We have relationships with many schools which we visit regularly to talk to their pupils about gap year opportunities or exhibit at their careers and gap year fairs. We also create tailor-made expeditions for schools who want to take young people out to the countries where we have a presence.
Membership organisations such as RSPB, Young Deaf Children's Society, Girlguiding UK, Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh Awards refer their young people onto our expeditions and we have also created tailor-made expeditions for them.
Local authorities refer their young staff onto expeditions as part of their development opportunities and we also create tailor-made expeditions for groups of young people at risk and their youth workers.
We create a range of different opportunities for companies and professional organisations from corporate social responsibility expeditions and team building weeks to graduate selection weekends and tailor-made leadership development expeditions. We also have secondment opportunities for the personal and leadership development of staff.
