Peter Ormerod has died after a long illness bravely borne, aged 78 on 11 February, 2008.
Peter (pictured, left) was one of the key characters who contributed to the huge success of Operation Raleigh and subsequently Raleigh International from its very earliest days in 1985.
Peter was born in India where he spent most of the first twenty years of his life including much of his education. Peter subsequently had a full and successful career in the British Army. On his retirement in December 1984 there was never any likelihood that he would choose a quiet spot to while away his 2nd career.
As an inveterate outdoorsman (having run the British Outward Boundcentre in Norway and having coordinated Adventurous Training in the Army) he was an ideal find for Raleigh. Peter was brought into Raleigh to head up its
diving operations around the world (having also founded Army Sport Diving and receiving the highest honour from the BSAC); this role he held for close to 13 years. Peter also ran the Staff Selection office in 1985 and 1986, was a PM on Lizard Island in Australia 7A in 1986, Deputy Director Plans and Expeditions in 1987 and 1988 and was finally Director Plans and Expeditions (effectively Operations Director with a responsibility for the safety of all Raleigh Expeditions, including excellent advice to our many Expedition Leaders over the years) until his retirement from Raleigh in 1994. Happily for Raleigh Peter continued as a Dive Consultant to Raleigh for a further five years where he continued to very actively contribute to the real developmental benefits of diving to young people. In addition Peter's acknowledged long memory was frequently accessed!
To all these roles he brought integrity, an expert knowledge, great empathy and a determination to do things right. Some mistook this determination for inflexibility but he had an unerring ability to perceive the correct and sensible course of action, and a deeply held sense of moral right and wrong. Peter made many visits to Expeditions to ensure standards were kept to the highest possible level and Raleigh was lucky to have Peter as the expert for one of the most potentially dangerous activities it carried out. He was an immensely trustworthy, committed and hard working individual who would not accept anything but the best from himself or others.
Unique to Peter was his ability to get on with others of all ages; holidays were taken diving, most often with ex Venturers and Staff who he had met on Expedition or on one of the many Dive training weekends that he coordinated.
Testament to his kindness, popularity and congenial nature, sometimes belied by his occasionally gruff countenance, were the various birthday parties held for him after he had left Raleigh; whilst Peter typically fussed about the arrangements many people of all ages and different Raleigh eras and Expeditions came to see him and to enjoy his company. He had a number of interests and perhaps one that seems unlikely was his fascination with
orang-utans which he might have come across in Malaya in the 50's but definitely did on his visit to Dive expeditions in Borneo in the 1980's, such was his love for them was his adoption of three from Monkey World in Dorset; in addition his house was full of orang-utan teddies given by many of his friends!
It has to be said that Peter was not a natural for retirement, he became increasingly frustrated by his deafness (caused by his service in Malaya fighting the communists in 1955/57 whilst he was a British Army Gunnery
Officer) and his lack of energy (caused by his cancer) which hindered him from doing the active things he had always done. But he was surrounded by a loving family and a great number of very close of friends who visited him and made sure he was looked after and cared for to the very end.
Raleigh was lucky to have Peter as such a passionate and experienced professional who was such a key member of the Raleigh community for so long; Raleigh benefited enormously from his wise and committed counsel for so many years, such a great character will be much missed by us all.
We have opportunities to join the head office team in Waterloo, London. Please visit work for us for details on the job description and application process.

Have you ever considered becoming a trustee? Trustees work to ensure that a charity or community organisation has a clear strategy, that it does not stray from the original vision, and that it complies with all legal obligations. Collectively trustees are known as the board.
Many youth charities and organisations reserve spaces on their board for young people. The young trustees play an important role in the organisation's decision making process and help to decide the future and direction of an organisation.
Young trustees gain a large number of skills and contacts that can help them in their future employment. It is a very exciting and challenging role with a lot of responsibility.
If this sounds like something you might like to get involved in, The Participation Works consortium are holding a free training course for young trustees.
This free one-day training course is for young people aged 16-25 who are, or would like to become trustees. Young people's travel expenses will also be covered.
The training sessions will be held in London and Newcastle:
Saturday 2 February, 2008 in London
Saturday 8 March 2008 in Newcastle
For more information or to book a space, please contact Participation Works at www.participationworks.org.uk or call 0845 603 6725 or email for a booking form at enquiries@participationworks.org.uk
