Volunteer Abroad with Raleigh

Raleigh expedition country Costa Rica has become one of the first sanctuaries for whales and dolphins in Latin America according to the Eco Preservation Society.

The move means that hunting, catching, hurting, harassing or trading the marine mammals are banned in all territorial waters, including those in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Scientists have said that Costa Rican waters serve as a migration route for whales, including the endangered humpback whale, as well as them mating and giving birth there. The waters are also a popular place for tourists to catch a glimpse of the amazing mammals as humpback whales travel thousands of miles to mate there and as a result the country has the longest humpback whale watching season in the world.

Costa Rica was ratified as the headquarters for the West Pacific Conservation Marine Corridor, which takes in the area of the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador), Cocos Island (Costa Rica), Coiba Island (Panama) and the Colombian islands Malpelo and Gorgona.
