Research insurance and laws before you go, gap year travellers warned

Gap year students could face huge bills and possible arrests due to having inadequate insurance and not preparing for their trip properly, a new report has shown.

The Foreign Office's latest British Behaviour Abroad study shows that British travellers are getting into various scrapes abroad from having their passports stolen to drink and drug problems and traffic accidents.

Separate Foreign Office research found that one in five Britons (19%) are travelling without travel insurance meaning they could face high medical and repatriation costs should anything happen.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister, Jeremy Browne advised travellers to check out a country and its laws properly before setting off. "This report shines a light on the number of Britons who get into difficulty abroad each year," he said. "The worrying fact is that so many of these situations are preventable. Helping out Britons in trouble abroad is part of our job, but we can't get you out of jail or pay your hospital bills.

"A bit of preparation before you go will ensure you get the most out of your trip without bad memories and big bills."
