Career breaks/retirement
Looking for a different daily grind?
Travelling is no longer just for students wanting time out. Perhaps you're taking a career break, retired or the kids have flown the nest, whatever the reason more of us want to escape the daily grind, challenge ourselves in a new way and give something back. But be warned our expeditions are no holiday. We like to think of them as a very different daily grind!
Volunteer managers
On every expedition we take between 25 to 40 volunteer managers, aged from 25 to 75, with a variety of skills to lead expeditions or support projects from field bases. Working alongside the country director and country programme manager, and up to 120 young people, their role is to make sure our projects are safe, successful and to a high standard. Volunteer managers make a huge difference to the lives of young people, the local communities and undergo a unique, rewarding journey of their own. Interested? If you're under 25 and taking a career break or sabbatical you can still join an expedition as a venturer.
The expeditions
We offer two main expeditions, 10 weeks or 5 weeks in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua, or India. As full training is given in-country, volunteer managers must commit to an additional 2-3 weeks, making the total expedition length 13 or 8 weeks.
10 week expeditions
Venturers get involved in community and environmental projects, then an adventure challenge. If 10 weeks is too long they can choose one project for 4 weeks or two project phases for 7 weeks. Volunteer managers will usually work on one project for the duration of the 10 weeks, but this may change so flexibility is a must!
5 week expeditions
Venturers combine a unique 3 week community or environment project with an intense, adrenalin-fuelled 7 day adventure. Volunteer managers on the project sites will either undertake a community or environmental project then complete the adventure challenge. Although not guarenteed, field based volunteer managers may occassionally get the opportunity to undertake the adventure challenge.
The projects
Whether providing villages in Nicaragua with their first drop of running water, building a school in Borneo or conserving the elephant population in India, our projects are planned with local partners so our venturers and volunteer managers can get really involved with rural communities and habitats and make a much needed difference there.
Visit Explore Borneo, Explore Costa Rica & Nicaragua and Explore India to see what kind of projects you will be doing.
