Who will be on my expedition?

We like to mix things up a bit and take you out of your comfort zone, which is why you'll be working closely with people from a range of backgrounds, nationalities and walks of life.

Each expedition comprises of 70 to 100 young people and around 40 volunteer managers. Project groups are split into teams of between 10 and 14 young people plus two volunteer managers. After each phase these teams will change round and you'll begin your next project with a new team of people.

To help you get the most of your Raleigh experience, we encourage people from different backgrounds, countries and cultures to work together to share and learn new skills. On your expedition there will be:

  • UK and International fundraising venturers - young people from around the world taking a gap year after school, college or university or taking time out from employment, education or training
  • Host Country venturers - young people from Borneo, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and India who are given bursaries to join an expedition
  • Partnership venturers -positive young people from disadvantaged and sometimes challenging backgrounds in the UK, and our international partnerships from Bermuda and Australia who, as part of a longer term development programme, join a Raleigh expedition
  • Volunteer managers - aged between 25 and 75 who join Raleigh as part of a career break, after their kids have left home or once they've retired and who want to give something back and take time out for themselves
  • Local staff - we often work in local communities and with local agencies and partners to achieve our project aims. You can expect to work along side or have regular contact with community members of all ages and representatives from our partners such as tradesmen, rangers, local guides and managers.

Regardless of where you come from, what you do, or where you live, by the end of expedition you'll all have one thing in common - a unique shared experience that you'll never forget. Working together as a team, you'll have to overcome personal challenges together, learn about yourselves and others and have made friends for life.

Don't take our word for it, watch our videos, browse the word of mouth and read our blogs to find out more about our expeditions and what life on Raleigh's really like.
