New Education and Development Adviser appointed at Raleigh

12 January 2009

Dr Brandon Charleston has been appointed as the Education and Development Adviser at youth and education charity Raleigh. The new role is the result of Raleigh's first Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) in collaboration with Birkbeck, University of London. The KTP initiative was awarded a total of £120,000 by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Technology Strategy Board in 2008, a third of which will go to Raleigh. Brandon will take up the post on 12th January.

Based at Raleigh with mentoring and support from academic staff at Birkbeck, Brandon will work with Raleigh staff and volunteers for two years to develop and implement an accreditation framework. His role will focus on evaluating the skills and expertise developed on Raleigh's international programmes, including leadership, global citizenship and intercultural communication.

Raleigh Chief Executive, Stacey Adams, said: "Dr Charleston's background in cross-cultural communication will be a great asset to his new role as Education and Development Adviser at Raleigh. For over 20 years participants have told us that the adventure, service, and experiential learning of the Raleigh expedition enables them to develop key skills, such as teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, perseverance and leadership. Our partnership with Birkbeck enables us to enhance our programmes and develop accreditation that delivers on our global citizenship and youth leadership aims."

Prior to this appointment Brandon was an independent consultant, trainer and researcher, working with organizations from small NGOs to large corporations, in the areas of leadership and cross-cultural capability. Over his career Brandon has volunteered on four Raleigh expeditions and led a number of shorter CSR/ Leadership Development expeditions and international youth programmes.
